Definition and Purpose of Course Reserves

Course reserves are items (including books, CDs, A/V items, journal articles and/or photocopies, electronic resources, instructional equipment, and non-book items) chosen by instructors to support class instruction. The items are maintained in a separate location within a library, and access to the item is more restricted than is the access to items in general circulation.

The purpose of a reserve collection is to:

• support OCC’s instructors and/or departments toward access of item stated above;
• provide timely, convenient, and efficient access to high-demand items; and
• making textbooks more readily available.

The library encourages the incorporation of a variety of course content through our course reserve system. The service is provided in a manner that respects the rights of copyright holders and the limitations to those rights as specified in current copyright law (See “Specific Guidelines” for more information).

...for you

• Once received it may take up to 3 class days to process items at which time you will receive confirmation of completion. Please postpone notifying your students until this confirmation is received.
  
• Supplying the master copies of items or a link to an online resource is your responsibility
  
• Only small portions of any copyrighted print work may be placed on reserves (see “Specific Guidelines” bullet #4 for more details).
• Please keep in mind that your students and the library staff need sharp, clear masters to make readable photocopies or electronic copies for ereserves.
  
• When submitting items please include:
  
  • The source of the item
  • The title by which you will refer to the item
  • The syllabus or assignment sheet, if applicable
    
• If an extra copy of your textbook is available consider placing it on Reserve (Students frequently inquire about the availability of textbooks).
  
• At the end of each Spring semester, we will ask you to review your reserve items.

• We require a student ID or driver’s license to access reserve items.
  
• There is a charge per page for photocopying.
  
• An OCC network account and password is required in order to view items in the electronic course reserve system.
