Informaton about library borrowing

Faculty - Renewals

If an item is needed for a longer period, faculty may renew items in person, by phone, by e-mail, or online through Coulter Library's online catalog "My Account" page.

Faculty - Holds

A "hold" may be placed on an item that is already checked out. Holds can be placed right from the Library catalog.  If someone places a hold on an item, the patron who has checked it out will be asked to return the item after twenty one (21) days (books or periodicals), seven (7) days (DVDs), or fourteen (14) days (CDs) from time of first borrowing the item.

Loan Periods

Faculty, administrators and staff may borrow 99 items at one time.

Faculty - Library Accounts

All library patrons should have a Coulter Library bar code affixed to their OCC ID card, which then serves as the library card. Once a bar code number has been assigned, items may be checked out without an OCC ID card, as long as identification can be verified.

Patrons are responsible for all items charged to their account. Please inform Coulter Library of a lost or stolen card, or change of address or phone number.

Students - Overdue/Lost Items

Coulter Library sends courtesy notices to students' OCC email accounts to let them know books and periodicals will be due soon.

Students - Renewals

If an item is needed for a longer period, students may renew items in person, by phone, by e-mail, or online through Coulter Library's online catalog "My Account" page.

  • Books: two renewals allowed
  • Periodicals: one renewal allowed
  • CDs: one renewal allowed
  • DVDs: one renewal allowed

NOTE: Items with hold requests cannot be renewed.

Students - Holds

Any student may place a "hold" on an item that is already checked out. Students can place holds right from the library catalog or ask library staff for assistance.  If someone places a hold on an item, the patron who has checked it out will be asked to return the item after twenty one (21) days (books or periodicals), seven (7) days (DVDs), fourteen (14) days (CDs) from time of first borrowing the item.

Students - Circulation of Materials

Coulter Library offers a variety of materials to support academics and for personal enjoyment.  Students may borrow up to fifteen items at one time.

Students - Library Accounts

To open a library account, the student fills out a registration card, and a library bar code is then placed on the back of the OCC ID card, which is then used as the library card. If a student is in the library's system but does not have an OCC ID card, he/she can still open their library account and receive a library barcode by showing their New York State driver's license.

Patron Records

Coulter Library will uphold section 4509 of New York State Law regarding patron's library records.

Therefore, no personal information of any kind can be legally released to anyone by Coulter Library, regardless of the requestor's official status, unless a court order or subpoena is presented and has been verified and authenticated by the campus attorney. In addition, such records can only be released "by the person in charge of such library, or a designee of such person" (section 2307, New York State Law).
